Fires are spreading north of Athens near Marathon, threatening homes near the blaze and turning the sky over Athens dark with smoke.

According to Sky News, locals said the fire has reached the villages of Grammatiko and Varnavas. No casualties have been reported.

Helicopters, planes, and trucks were dispatched to the scene, but firefighters have been battling strong winds.

The New York Times reports there are concerns the fire could move towards the northern suburbs of Athens.

Greek officials have declared a state of emergency and missiles have been removed from a military base in the area, according to news reports.

Here’s another report from Kathimerini.
