Residents take action
The historical centre of Athens has earned itself a bad reputation for some time now. Drug deals taking place in the middle of the day and large throngs of jobless immigrants lounging on corners has created what many call a ghetto. The police have lately performed numerous sweeps and raids that have produced results but the area’s reputation has yet to change.
Residents and business owners of the area are not very pleased with the situation and some have formed the Citizens Movement for the Rescue of the Historical Centre. More of an umbrella organization, it is comprised of 15 smaller neighborhood organizations that want change for Athens. I spoke to members of this organization and got their take on things.
